IMPROVE INDUSTRIAL SECTOR

Engineers in Nigeria have urged the  Federal Government to reform the power and other industrial sectors. The on going reform has pursued more vigorously and expeditiously to make a change. They said risk fund managers should be encouraged to fund industrial projects that were based on local technology and research-industry partnerships.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the 2007 International Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, in Abuja between December 3 and 7. with the theme of the conference as, “Human capacity building in engineering for sustainable development,” noted that much of the existing power generation infrastructure was delivering far less power to consumers than their installed capacities.

The engineers expressed the believe that besides poor maintenance, many operators of the power systems lacked the skill for getting the most out of installed systems.

They noted that beyond installing additional power generation capacities, operators should adequately train the plant operators to ensure end-user realisation of installed generation capacities.

In the telecommunication sector, the NSE urged the regulating authorities to adopt universally-recognised measures of quality in appraising the performance of service providers and publish these for the consumers’ information in order to stimulate a healthy competition.

The conference restated its appreciation of the gesture of government in issuing the White Paper on the report of the Presidential Committee on Strategic Plans for Engineering Development in Nigeria.
